With March break just around the corner, the kids will all be home itching for something fun to do. If you’re a parent, teacher, or guardian looking for some creative ideas to keep the kids busy and full of smiles, check out some of these awesome egg activities!
Whether at home or in the classroom, this fun activity will have kids rolling up their sleeves to conduct their own science lab tests. Let the young scientists make their own hypotheses about what will happen and see who is right!
All you need to get started is two eggs, two glasses of water, and some table salt.
How to:
1. Fill two glasses with water.
2. Stir ¼ cup (50 mL) salt into one glass until the salt is dissolved.
3. Ask your young scientists to write down or share their hypotheses for what the egg will do in each glass.
4. Place a raw egg in its shell in each glass.
5. See what happens and who hypothesized correctly!
Result:
When you dissolve salt in the water, you make it heavier, or denser, than the egg, which means the egg will float. With a little eggs-perimenting, you can add just enough salt to make the egg float halfway in the glass.
Put your observation skills to the test!
If you’re looking for a fun activity to help hone kids’ observational skills, try this egg and soda eggs-periment!
Bonus:
You can also highlight the value of healthy oral hygiene!
How to:
1. Fill a glass with cola.
2. Place a raw egg into the glass.
3. Soak the egg in the glass filled with cola for 1 hour.
4. Check on the egg every 15 minutes and have the children write down their observations. Include as many details as possible.
5. After 1 hour, remove the egg from the soda.
6. What happened to the egg? What happens when you use a toothbrush and toothpaste to brush the egg? Are there any similarities between the egg and your teeth?
Result:
The egg becomes stained with cola, and the stains can be removed by using toothpaste.
*You could add an extension activity where kids leave the egg in cola for 24 hours and hypothesize what might happen based on the initial 1-hour result.
