This November marks the exciting launch of the Farm to Table Student Eggs-perience, a 3-part program designed to give Ontario students an up-close look at egg farming in Ontario. As a teacher, you know the power of hands-on learning, and this program does just that—by bringing a real Ontario egg farmer directly into your classroom!
This program is an incredible opportunity to inspire curiosity and connect students to where their food comes from.
What is the Farm to Table Student Eggs-perience?
The Farm to Table Student Eggs-perience is a three-part program developed specifically for Ontario classrooms, targeting students from Kindergarten to Grade 8. The goal is to provide a real-world connection to the farming industry while emphasizing food literacy, nutrition, and understanding the journey of the egg from the farm to our table.
Here’s how it works:
- Interactive Presentations by Egg Farmers: Ontario egg farmers will visit your classroom to give your students a peek into their world. These farmers will share what goes into producing fresh eggs every day, explaining how they care for their hens and manage their farms. Your students will learn about the life of a farmer, from daily routines to egg collection and ensuring hens are well-cared for.
- Hands-On Learning: The program is packed with interactive activities that align with Ontario’s curriculum. These activities make learning fun while teaching students about food systems, animal care, and agriculture. The program’s hands-on STEM approach is perfect for engaging students of all ages.
- Curriculum-connected Lessons: The Farm to Table Student Eggs-perience provides lessons that are directly connected to the Ontario curriculum. It’s a seamless way to enhance your classroom while providing a real-world connection to agriculture.
Why Should You Bring an Egg Farmer to Your Class?
Meeting an egg farmer provides students with an authentic connection to the food on their plate. They’ll gain a deeper understanding of how local farms operate and the importance of agriculture. Plus, the program encourages critical thinking, collaboration, and curiosity, all while aligning with curriculum standards in science, health, math, language, and social studies.
The Farm to Table Student Eggs-perience also promotes food literacy, an important life skill. In today’s world, understanding where food comes from and how it’s produced is essential. This program helps students see that the journey from farm to table is full of care, responsibility, and dedication—values that are at the heart of Ontario egg farming.
