The practice of the Easter tree has its roots in early German traditions. For centuries, families would gather together by bringing bare branches indoors in a vase of water and decorating them with painted eggs. This tradition is called Ostereierbaum. Families all around the world celebrate Ostereierbaum, with the most participation in Poland, Austria and Hungary.
In a small town in Germany named Saalfeld, one famous Easter tree inspires great admiration. With over 10,000 painted eggs, the Saalfeld tree sits in the garden of Mr. Volker Kraft. Volker and his family added about 700 eggs every year until 2015 to achieve this spectacular display. The record for the biggest Easter Tree belongs to the Rostock Zoo with an astounding 79,596 blown and painted eggs!
