Egg farmers cook omelettes for Ontario politicians

November 29th, 2010

I started off the morning bright and early today at Queen’s Park in Toronto (that’s Ontario’s Legislative Assembly for any non-Ontarians reading this!) cooking breakfast for our MPPs. To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t actually cooking. The farmers on our Board of Directors were the ones donning aprons and playing chef for the morning. They were making omelettes, as they’ve done for the past 12 years, at their annual Omelette Breakfast for MPPs and Queen’s Park staff.

The Queen’s Park dining room staff prepares omelette fillings including cheese, tomatoes, ham, and sauteed mushrooms, onions and sweet peppers. They also crack and whisk the eggs ahead, which our omelette chefs pour or ladle from pitchers into the 8-inch (20 cm) frying pans in which they cook the omelettes. Guests can choose which fillings they want in their omelettes.

A choice of fillings for the omelettes!

This event is always a fun, busy morning. The politicians and staffers seem to enjoy the breakfast, and our farmers really appreciate the opportunity to interact with the MPPs, especially if their riding’s elected representative is able to attend the breakfast. Our omelette chefs are all pretty darn good at making omelettes. The cooking method they use is one farmer Scott demonstrates in this video. If you want the ‘recipe’ and some cooking tips, check out this blog post I wrote on how to cook an omelette. In case the first photo above made you wonder…. No, our 11-person Board of Directors is not just made up of men. There are a couple women on the Board, including the Chair! As well, two of the farmers on our Board, Scott (third from the right in the first picture above) and Hubert (he was busy greeting guests during the breakfast), are featured in our Who Made Your Eggs Today? campaign. Click on their names to find out more about them and their families.
