Egg Farmers of Ontario and Rocks & Rings Bring Curling to Elmira School

January 17th, 2025

ELMIRA, ON (January 17, 2025) – From January 10th to 16th, Egg Farmers of Ontario, in collaboration with Rocks & Rings and fifth-generation egg farmer Claire Ross, hosted a week-long curling event at John Mahood Public School in Elmira. This initiative aimed to promote the connection between eggs and curling in schools while encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle.

The event began on January 10th with a school-wide program led by Rocks & Rings instructors, who introduced students to the basics of curling. A video crew was there to capture content and interview Claire Ross on her experience as a teacher and egg farmer:

“I think it’s crucial for students to know where their food comes from. Starting my teaching career in Cambridge, Ontario, showed me firsthand the disconnect between rural and urban living. I love showing students what we do on our farm and how we are taking care of our land for the next generations. The biggest question I get from my students is, ‘Madame, when can we take a field trip to your farm?’ I love that I get to work with my family every day and that I get to spend time with my very curious students, showing them what a real family farm does year-round. The joke at our house isn’t ‘What would you like for dinner?’; it’s ‘How would you like your eggs?’”

Additionally, Canadian curling champions Team Homan supported the event by pre-recording a video in which they expressed their love for curling and eggs. They encouraged the students to watch them compete in the WFG Masters, which was happening simultaneously in Guelph, generating excitement about competitive curling within the community.

Following the kickoff, teachers conducted independent curling units with their classes. The school also received a donation of two Rocks & Rings FloorCurl sets, valued at $1,200, enabling them to continue incorporating curling into their winter sports curriculum.
