It’s all about the hens!
Ensuring their hens are well cared for is the top priority for Ontario egg farmers. Our farmers work with feed nutritionists and veterinarians to ensure the best care possible is provided for their hens.
Did you know…
Farmers also have to adhere to a national Animal Care Program and On-Farm Food Safety Program.
Where are the hens kept?
There are a variety of housing systems used in Ontario. Hens are housed in well-lit and well-ventilated barns where they can be closely monitored.
What do the hens eat?
Egg farmers feed their hens a balanced diet of grains, vitamins, and minerals. Some farmers will even grow their own crops to feed the hens.
Did you know…
Farmers may supplement calcium in a hen’s diet to make sure the hen has enough to produce a hard shell.
What about the eggs?
The eggs are collected every day. They are packed right on the farm, loaded onto flats and stored in the cooling room until the grading station truck arrives to pick them up.
Then what?
The eggs are picked up at the farm and delivered to the grading station.
