Eggs can go from the farm to table in as little as 4–7 days. The journey involves three main steps: the farm, the grading station, and the grocery store.
1. Eggs Are Collected on the Farm
Egg farmers collect eggs regularly throughout the day. After collection, the eggs are placed in a refrigerated cooler on the farm until they are transported to a grading station.
2. Eggs Are Washed and Graded
At the egg grading station, the eggs are carefully washed, candled, and weighed. Candling uses light to inspect the inside of the egg and identify any imperfections.
After grading, the eggs are packaged and kept refrigerated to maintain their freshness and quality.
3. Eggs Arrive at the Grocery Store
The packaged eggs are loaded onto a refrigerated truck and transported to grocery stores. From there, they make their way to your refrigerator and eventually your kitchen!
