What are free range eggs?

Answered by Egg Farmers of Ontario May 5th, 2020

Answer

Free-range eggs come from hens that are housed in an indoor barn with access to the outdoors when weather and conditions permit. The hens can move around the barn, access food and water, and spend time outdoors.

Free-range eggs are one of several egg choices available at Canadian grocery stores. The nutritional value of eggs is generally similar across different housing systems, although Omega-3 eggs are different because the hens that lay them are fed a diet that includes flaxseed, which increases the omega-3 content of the eggs.

When choosing eggs, the right option often comes down to personal preference and what is available to you.
