Why are eggs sized differently?

Answered by Egg Farmers of Ontario February 27th, 2017

Answer

Eggs are sized based on weight to ensure a consistent product when you buy a carton.

Though eggs in the same carton may look different in size, they will all fall within a similar weight range.

The weight ranges for eggs are as follows:

  • Peewee: less than 42 grams
  • Small: 42-48 grams
  • Medium: 49-55 grams
  • Large: 56-62 grams
  • Extra Large: 63-69 grams
  • Jumbo: 70 grams or more
